I completed my undergraduate medical training at the University of Leeds, followed by an Academic Foundation Programme in Liverpool and an Academic Clinical Fellowship in London.

I’m interested in using transcriptomic and genomic data to better understand variation in disease phenotype and severity among patients with infectious diseases, with a particular interest in translating these insights into therapeutic strategies. My current work aims to identify patients with severe dengue infection who are most likely to benefit from host-directed therapies, and I also contribute to a global platform trial investigating treatments for patients hospitalised with dengue. 

I’ve enjoyed being a part of NITCAR for a number of years and I hope to build on the excellent work of previous Chairs. In this role I aim to continue our support for efficient delivery of high-quality research and audit projects, develop the experience and skills of early-career researchers, and to strengthen our close relationship with the British Infection Association.

I studied medicine at the University of Manchester, where I developed an interest in neuropathology during an intercalated BSc in Pathology. Following Foundation training, I worked with Prof Tom Solomon’s Liverpool Brain Infections Group in Brazil and the UK, completing a PhD investigating neurological disease associated with Zika, chikungunya virus, and COVID-19 in the context of the pandemic.

I’m looking forward to joining NITCAR as Secretary and Vice-Chair. I strongly believe in NITCAR’s aim to make collaborative research, audit and quality improvement more accessible, and to empower trainees, specialty doctors, clinical scientists, and pharmacists to lead and contribute to high-quality projects that have impact for patients.

2013. Dr Kirby has a research interest in clinical trials, particularly in surgical patients. Dr Kirby is Chair of the Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) grants committee, and vice chair of the HIS AMR and Wastewater Collaborative.

She graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and holds an MSc with Distinction in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Alongside her clinical training, Catherine has an active portfolio in infectious diseases research, medical education and trainee leadership. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and national conference presentations, with research spanning antimicrobial resistance, respiratory infections and bacteriophage therapy. She has led several national educational initiatives, been on multiple national committees including as Executive Director of an international thinktank, and currently serves as an Associate RCP Tutor at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. She was formerly Charity/Sponsorship Lead and now is Academic Meetings Lead for NITCAR, wherein she supports the development of NITCAR-run sessions at annual educational events that promote high-quality infectious diseases research and foster engagement with trainees.

Microbiology based in Hull, my interests include imported infections, deprivation, and infection control. My current research looks at approaches to estimating undiagnosed burden of disease, working on clinical trials such as SNAP and BiVista and supporting other research programmes locally and nationally. I will be working as communications lead, responsible for internal and external NITCAR communications and will be producing the quarterly newsletter. 

I have been on the committee as website lead since 2023. In this role, I maintain the website with information about new studies in the NITCAR portfolio as well as updating information regarding ongoing studies. I also manage the email account as well as contribute to our monthly committee meetings.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals. I graduated with an MBBS from Newcastle University in 2022, where I also completed a Masters of Research in Epidemiology, with research focusing on the molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic surveillance of HIV. I have been based in London since graduating, except to complete my Diploma of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene at the Bernhard Nacht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg.

Prior to starting IMT, I worked as a Clinical Fellow in Infectious Diseases at Imperial College Healthcare Trust where I further developed my interest in research working as an Associate Principal Investigator on the SNAP and ASPECT trials.

Mersey Deanery with an interest in pursuing combined infection training. Prior to entering training, I spent three years in Clinical Fellow positions in Medical Microbiology and Virology across different sites, including a post focused on the implementation, evaluation, and delivery of a clinical metagenomics service. This work involved service development, governance, clinical impact assessment, and supporting the integration of metagenomic diagnostics into routine patient care.

I am particularly interested in molecular diagnostics in infectious diseases and I am currently undertaking a Diploma in Genomic Medicine at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), has allowed me to explore deeper the application of genomics and molecular technologies. I have been involved in academic writing and research activities, including the publication of a systematic review assessing HIV status and the risk of typhoid fever and invasive non-typhoidal salmonella, which helped develop my interest in clinical research and evidence-based practice. As NITCAR Funding Lead, I am passionate about supporting collaborative research, securing opportunities for trainees, and helping to build a strong national network to facilitate impactful projects.
