Further to the presentation made at the BIA Trainees Day 19th May 2011 by trainee representative Dr Susie Alleyne, a survey with regards to the new Infection Curriculum was developed. This survey will allow the BIA trainees committee to feedback to the committees involved in developing the new curriculum - particularly the infection training working group, Joint committee in infection and tropical medicine and the Specialty advisory committees.
Please note that this survey is now closed.
Results of the survey are now available - click here.
Pdf’s of a power point presentation in relation to the new curriculum & comments from the SAC in Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine by the SAC chair Alastair Miller are available below.

Infection Training comments from IDSAC (pdf)
As a result of MMC, ID/GIM and ID/micro/virology trainees have entered training at ST3, and medical microbiology trainees at ST1. There are now discussions underway regarding the structure of future training programmes for all infection-related specialties. Proposed options will take into account the future role of 'Infection Specialists' in hospitals, and possible training schemes are currenty in embryonic form and are to be put to the Academy of Colleges later this year. We will update this page as more definitive information becomes available.
For further information, please see the following websites which are updated regularly:
Please see the College websites for official updated information.
A basic summary is as follows:
- MRCP: Trainees in ID/GIM will need to have PACES before proceeding to ST3. Whether or not joint ID/micro trainees will be required to have PACES is still under discussion, but is likely.
- MRCPath: Micro and ID/Micro trainees will take MRCPath during speciality training according to a training timetable specified in the Microbiology curriculum (under discussion).
- Exit exams: under discussion.
Accreditation in Tropical Medicine has traditionally been restricted to very few trainees, but this may change as the structure of tropical training also changes under MMC. More information should be available soon.
See Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for information of DTM&H courses.
