Antibiotic Action

Dear BIA members

CALL FOR SUPPORT

Antibiotic Action

Securing the future of antibiotic development …. determined to make a difference

www.antibiotic-action.com

The British Infection Association strongly supports Antibiotic Action, the global call for action to develop new antibiotics. Current practice and future advances in medicine and surgery are dependent on the availability of effective antimicrobial agents. This affects not only the management of infectious disease, but also cancer treatments, organ transplantation, and a wide range of other treatments and procedures. There is an urgent need for governments, industry, healthcare professionals and charities to promote the responsible use of existing antibiotics worldwide, and to collaborate to support research into, and the development of new antimicrobial agents.

There will be a parliamentary event on 9 November at the House of Commons to launch the initiative.  This event is supported by Kevin Barron MP, following which a petition will be delivered to 10 Downing Street calling for cross party initiatives that will help stimulate interest in antibiotic discovery and development.

As a BIA member, you are asked to show your support by signing the petition (see below), and to share details of Antibiotic Action (see website below for resources) with friends and colleagues in your professional and social networks.

Best wishes

Jane

Antibiotic Action is a call to arms.

Antibiotic Action is the forum through which all parties – government, health professionals, industry and charities – are called to identify and implement solutions within the research, regulation and economic markets to stimulate and regenerate interest in the discovery and development of antibiotic agents of the future.

Multi-drug resistant infections regularly feature prominently in the news via the “superbug” stories. New antibiotic development will be essential to tackle these and to underpin a broad range of therapies such as – chemotherapy treatment, transplant surgery, joint replacement surgeries, all of which would be seriously jeopardized by a fall in the availability of effective antibiotics.

Antibiotic Action is fighting to change this.
